2023.11880 and 2023.11760 both crashing a minute or two after startup

Hi there, been a couple of years since using TD (last build was 2020) but getting back into it now that I’ve acquired a Kinect Azure. Have recently installed the latest build but found it crashing after a minute or two, so rolled back to 2023.11760 but still have the same issue.

This occurs even without external devices plugged in, and when starting a new network (I start up TD and don’t do anything - still crashes after a minute). I have just gone through a troubleshooting tutorial and ran WinDbg, the dump file created was almost 3GB! I’ll attach my log to the next post. Any advice is much appreciated, hoping to get back into motion capture installations this year =)

As a first step, make sure that all your drivers, including integrated graphic drivers, are up to date and that your machine is free of bloatware.

or use Nvidia Geforce Experience Update Drivers & Optimal Playable Settings

You can also make sure that your integrated GPU is running on the latest version available via Intel Driver Assistant.

You can use the AMD Adrenalin if you have an AMD Integrated GPU, in minimal install mode, via https://www.amd.com/en/technologies/software

If your machine comes with a proprietary power management software (From Asus, Dell / Alienware… etc), make sure that it’s setup properly to run TouchDesigner on the Nvidia / AMD DEDICATED GPU when plugged to power. Otherwise, it’s likely that TouchDesigner would run on the integrated graphics, hence it is important to also make sure your integrated graphics are up to date.

Hi there, appreciate the reply and suggestions.

All of my drivers are updated, TD is set to run on dedicated NVIDIA GPU and PC is free of bloat thanks to Bulk Crap Uninstaller.

Unfortunately it still crashes about a minute after opening. The software itself runs fine during that time and no errors appear on the log.

the dump file created was almost 3GB!

For WinDbg, this compress nicely to around 4-500mb.

Could you possibly share this, generated in the latest build available, to a cloud service ?

Yeah for sure, compressed dump file and log is here (I get no error message or dump file when crashing, so I had to output from WinDbg): 2024.08.22 Crash dump and log.zip - Google Drive

I also ensured the latest Visual Studio was installed, but still no change.

However I did notice that I get no crashing when I turn global cooking off, I can leave it running for an hour but then crashes not long after cooking is re-enabled.

Thanks for sending the dump file. I took a look at it, but unfortunately couldn’t discern much. The file is just pointing to exit code rather than where the actual crash is happening.

Just to be clear, this crash doesn’t require doing anything within TouchDesigner? If you open up the default project and leave it for a few minutes it will crash reliably?

Have you tried going back to a 2022, or 2021 version of touch to see if those are more stable? I’m going to dig up an older machine with a similar generation video card to see if I can reproduce anything as well.

Hi there Rob,

That’s correct, I start up a blank file (or any file for that matter), and it crashes within a minute or two (whether I leave it or start working.
The 2020 build works just fine, I’ll try a version in between soon and see where the cutoff date may be.

As far as the dump file code, I don’t suppose the C++ EH exceptions could have been of any relevance?
While monitoring with WinDbg, the only thing that changes after the program fully loads is the " ntdll!NtTerminateProcess+0x14: 00007ff9 287b0524 c3 ret" line just as it crashes. Is that the exit code you’re referring to?

2022 was the big change from OpenGL to Vulkan which is likely the biggest change between those releases.

I did some online searches for the exception code, but it just seems to be a general windows application error and the suggestions are just to run windows install repairs.

The dump file itself was a little confusing, so it was hard to draw much information from it. As I mentioned, it seemed to be at a point that was already exiting the process and there was no active exception so it is a little hard to tell what it was doing.

I’m happy to look at another one if you want to send it over to see if there is any difference. I’m also not sure if there are any additional commands/flags in windbg that could give more information.

Oh, wow. I thought it was just me.
When I searched around after the 2023.11760 update, I couldn’t find anything.

Just gave 2023.11880 a try now and I’m running in the same situation again…
Open TD and in 1-2 minutes it crashes in every scenario (messing with OPs, external toxes, idling…).

2023.11600 is stable though, fwiw (@GS91).
Using extensively since launch, never had a crash (that wasn’t my fault lol).

Running an Alienware m15 Ryzen Edition R5.
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5800H with Radeon Graphics 3.20 GHz
GPU: NVIDIA RTX 3060 6GB
RAM: 32 GB
OS: Windows 10 Home 22H2

OS, GPU and integrated GPU drivers are up to date.
No bloatware, but I use a lot of software (Ableton, Topaz, VS Code, Adobe Suite, etc.).

From the other threads, the only constant is a laptop running a NVIDIA GPU.

Unfortunately there doesn’t seem to be much of a connection between these cases, and the dump files still don’t indicate any specific problem.

We’ve seen some random crashes from a known instability with Intel 13th and 14th generation i9 processors due to a hardware bug with those chips, but those dump files look quite different than yours.

It might be worth checking that your license is installed correctly. You can disable your current license from the Key Manager window and then re-install it from that same window after logging in to your account.

There’s some help here on using the Key Manager dialog if you need it: Key Manager Dialog - Derivative and you can always e-mail licensing@derivative.ca if you’re still having problems with licensing related issues.
