5.1 output - how exactly are the channels handled?

I have 5 chans to feed into an audio out for a 5.1 system output.

are the channels applied to the checkmarked speakers in their order (first channel to first found checkmark, second chan to second found checkmark) or do they need to be named in a specific way?

It goes by order, not by channel name.
