Hi. Beginner here. My question is: is it possible to make interactive art with TouchDesigner in a live rock show which isn’t electronic music?
I’ve been amazed by TouchDesigner live music performances in Youtube but all of them seemed to be DJing or using only the synthesizer. The band I’m talking about is a classical rock band; composed with a electric guitar, a base guitar, a synthesizer, and drums. I’m also new to the concept of MIDI, so I’m not sure if TouchDesiger can be used in that kind of purpose(non-electric music).
If it can be used, it will be so much help if you let me know how to do it, or where I can learn. Thanks.
We at Derivative cut our teeth in large scale shows in the rock genre actually, these were some of the early years of TouchDesigner being proven as a tools for professional shows. If you’ve heard of the Canadian rock band Rush, we did 2 world tours with them, and they did a third by themselves with TouchDesigner. You can read about these historical event in Derivative’s history here:
There have been hundreds of shows in the genre since then by TouchDesigner users, but these are shows almost 20 years ago are nice to recall.
MIDI is core to a lot of audio devices and well supported in TouchDesigner, but TouchDesigner also supports OSC (Open Sound Control) popular which most audio software now, and direct audio-in with audio analysis so you can create triggers from any input. Check out the audioAnalysis component in the Palette to get started with that.
