converting camera from c4d to TD

whats the best way to convert 1 on 1 scene from c4d to TD …still having no luck with the conversion of the camera position …Focal/lens data is ok but still not the same as in c4d

Hey iejun,

This is something I was just planning to try and figure out this week. I’ll let you know if I make any progress.

best,
Los

What build are you using? I just did some changes that are in build 26000.

Don’t know about the latest releases, but before that it was quite straight forward: juste punch in the same numbers and it works. Well, your model should be scaled properly if you do rendering in C4D.

I was able to get an imported FBX from C4D to work well with TouchDesigner, including basic materials and animations. It required a few extra tweaks, which I commented in the attached project file.

I used C4D r15 and exported FBX 6.1 (2010). I’m not sure why, but TD doesn’t seem to import FBX 7.x files with working animations. I’ve seen this limitation mentioned elsewhere in the forums. Anyone know if there are any plans to support 7.x?

The 30000 series of builds has been upgraded to the latest FBX SDK. Hopefully those will import now for you

aa thx all for the reply’s. will give it a try with the 26000 build. And let you all know how it went.

Hey Malcolm, thanks for the response. I tried it this morning with build 30640 and it wouldn’t import any FBX 7.0, 7.1, 7.2, or 7.3 files with animation, regardless of whether or not I baked the animations. FBX 6.1 did work.

iejun, this is included in the commented project file I previously attached, but it might be helpful to write it out in a forum thread for search purposes: I found that the imported Cinema 4D scenes needed to be scaled by 1/200 or 0.005.

Can you post a sample .fbx that doesn’t import animations?

Hey Malcolm, here are some FBX files, a .toe with them all imported, and the C4D source file.

will give it a try this week

Hey, sorry for the delay in answering this. Post fell through the cracks.
As far as I can tell the reason the animations don’t come in is although the .fbx has animation curves for some of the objects, the actual ‘Take’ has a length of 0 seconds which is why you only get a single sample in your imported animation CHOP.
Not sure how to remedy this on the C4D side though.

I still couldn’t figure the proportion between imported c4d scenes and TD,
is that 1/200 ratio true?
What’s the best workflow, scale down in c4d before import to TD,
or scale down the imported geometry?
Does it give any problems?

Hey gionniz,

We ended up figuring out that if you set your units to centimeters in C4D, everything will translate nicely to TouchDesigner without having to do any funky scaling after importing. Hope this helps!
