Creating a 'magnetic attraction' between objects

Hi
I’ll try as best I can to describe the effect I am after.

I have a static grid composed of spheres using the grid SOP as shown in this last tutorial from HK University
youtube.com/watch?v=50JW2_rR … jOcc70Vcim

In the tutorial both magnet and metaball CHOPs are used to apply a ‘force’ over the entire grid, fed by an audio signal.

Instead I want to make the spheres in the grid behave as though they were held in a force field, so a user can ‘poke a hole’ in the grid, displace the spheres but they would spring back to their original position.

I’m guessing I might still use the metaball and magnet CHOP’s but would need to alter the behaviour of each.
1 The metaballs center determined by where the user touches
2 The behaviour of the magnet force changed to give it a type of ‘spring’ effect

Can anyone help or suggest some next steps?

Hi,
try using a spring instead of a magnet along with a metaball and force going into the spring. - Ian

If you reduce the mass and drag it should fire the bits off into space as the ball hits.
