Creating a VJ touch-pad program

Hey, I’m very new to touch designer and I had a question about a particular use I have in mind.

I’m certain that TD has the capability to create something like this but it’s a bit too specific for me to find appropriate tutorials easily. What I want to do is make sort of a touch pad VJ interface for live visual drumming. Using an APC40, I want to be able to assign my available pads to trigger ONE instance of an animation. For instance: a touch of a pad will trigger a circle to quickly grow and fade. Another touch of the same pad would trigger the same, but not restart the animation - it would generate another quick grow - fade of a circle on top of that. I want to be able to assign a variety of these short and simple animations to my touch pad; so that it could be overlaid on top of some background animation in Resolume Arena. I could then jam along to music like visual drumming to have it really locked into the rhythm. I know I can have audio input trigger this sort of thing but I want to do it manually and live.

Is this possible? I’m looking to be pointed in the right direction / tutorials to start moving in that direction. I love TD so far!

EDIT: This probably could have been posted in beginners, feel free to move if necessary.

Thanks!

Hi niwaskow, welcome to touchdesigner.

What you describe is certainly possible.

A good place to start for you is maybe these 5-minute tutorials,
which will teach you to make a basic animation of a 3d-smiley face which is controlled by a 3rd party device, in this case an iphone, but you can easily replace that with an APC-40 by using a Midi CHOP instead of the OSC In Chop which is used in this tutorial.

Have fun!
