Excessive GPU utilization, frame drops, even on default startup file

Hello there
I am finding that Touchdesigner has suddenly begun to drop frames on simple projects, and my GPU is being taxed 80+%, even when opening the default startup file. I have updated all NVIDIA and Intel drivers. The problem seems to be connected to resolution. My system default is 3840 x 2160. The problem is greatly exaggerated if global resolution is left to this default (25-30 fps on default file), and can be made better (not fixed) if setting system resolution to 1920 x 1080. ChatGPT suggested overriding high DPI scaling behavior in the application properties, this did not work. If i manually scale the touchdesigner window by dragging it, the gpu usage drops accordingly.

I saw a similar post last year that suggested disk corruption could be the problem, I’ve ran chkdsk on both drives already, no outstanding problems there.

I’m not sure what to examine now, I’ve been throwing myself at this for days… any help would be massively appreciated! If there’s any additional/relevant info i need to add here let me know

I am working on a Gigabyte AERO 15k laptop with following specs:
-11th Gen Intel(R) Coreâ„¢ i7-11800H @ 2.30GHz (2.30 GHz)
-Nvidia RTX 3060 Laptop GPU
-Intel(R) UHD Graphics

Touchdesigner version 2023.1200 (problem persists across different versions)

Hi @tcohantz,

when you say that you observed it dropping resolution suddenly, this suggests that it was running fine previously.
Were there any changes made to the system since then? Where there any windows updates installed?

cheers
Markus

There weren’t any major changes (that I’m aware of). But recently the GPU seems to have been fried completely and is no longer recognizable by the motherboard. So it was probably the early warning signs of failing hardware… either way its moot now.
Thanks for the reply!
