I am having a huge FPS drop when opening dialogs. On a blank project, it goes from 60 → ~16FPS simply by opening one.
Background: I recently upgraded from Ventura to Sonoma and that’s when the problem started. I noticed the issues once or twice on other project files, but as I was mostly just tweaking params, and not using any dialogs often, I didn’t narrow the cause down.
Today, I have isolated the issue, I believe.
Dialogs tested: Op Create, Midi, Key Manager, Textport, Performance, Window, Variables, Palette (Fixed is fine, only floating ones cause issues)
I don’t think its to do with floating windows, your frame rate is tanking even after putting down the first node with no dialog/floating window open. Can you grab the output of the Performance Monitor when the frame rate is down around 15fps like it was after you added the Movie File In TOP?
Is it only when the Phillips monitor is connected or other external monitors do the same?
You could try different cables/outputs, like HDMI vs USB-C.
Although macOS 14.7.4 shouldn’t be a problem, anything keeping you from macOS 15? Its very stable now that its a few months after release.
The frame rate would jump back to 60fps after ±30 seconds of closing a dialog.
It was only the Philips monitor, via HDMI. My projector (via HDMI) or tablet screen (USB-C) did not cause the issues.
However, I restarted my computer not long after posting and the issue stopped. So I can’t reproduce it now.
Nothing concrete stopping me from 15, so I’ll do that this week and only follow up if the issue re-appears.
When you have the Phillips connected, place a Monitors DAT down in the network, look at the frame rate reported. This sounds similar to vsync fighting that often happens on Optimus laptops when one monitor isn’t running at the correct rate, the primary then slows down because its trying (but fighting) to match vertical sync. TVs do have weird 120fps and framerate doubling modes, there might be some trouble introduced by that?
