Frozen floating window frame bug?

This may entirely be a me problem but I wanted to float it here in case anyone else has seen it or if there’s some insight on how to troubleshoot:

Sometimes (very intermittent seeming so far ) my floating TD windows when closed will leave a ghost of their former selves frozen overlaying anything and everything that I move around the desktop, including any other windows dialogues or applications. This usually happens when I close Touch directly with several floating windows still open, but it just happened a few min ago where I simply clicked the X on a floating window and it caused a frame to be left behind as well.

Here’s what it looks like:

So far, the only way I’ve found to fix this is to restart my computer. I imagine if there was some clever way to reinit the video drivers / fully clear the active video memory or something of that nature it would go away? but tbh I’m not sure.

I’ve run into this on the 2021 and 2022 branch of TD, across multiple projects. windows 11

Hey @lucasm

I’m guessing your gpu drivers are up to date ?

Are you on a laptop or desktop ?

Best,
Michel

oh yes, up to date though this has been happening for quite a while for me across several driver versions.

desktop!

Are you using anything non-default when starting your TD project? Like an environment variable set to something specific?

Nope, this happens when I dbl click a toe file and open it that way, or if I right click → open with specific version, can happen that way as well. it doesn’t always happen. I can close windows quite often and it only seems to happen every so often.

Reviving to say I also have this issue. Happened when I had the TOP Viewer floating windows open for a couple of operators, closed TD, and when opening back up it looked like that. The windows were actually closed, it’s just a visual bug. I can’t find a way to “close” them.

Hi @brda

Can you confirm that your TouchDesigner is up to date?

Can you confirm that all of your drivers are up to date?

Best,
Michel

Yes I am using 2023.11880
However I quickly tried to reproduce and I can’t seem to be able to. It must’ve happened under an app state edge case

Make sure you are always using the latest version of TouchDesigner, your GPU drivers, and that your machine is free of bloatware.

The Bulk Crap Uninstaller helps in identifying unwanted or unneeded software: https://www.bcuninstaller.com/

Find the latest driver for your GPU at Official Drivers | NVIDIA
or use Nvidia Geforce Experience Update Drivers & Optimal Playable Settings

You can also make sure that your integrated GPU is running on the latest version available via Intel Driver Assistant.

You can use the AMD Adrenalin if you have an AMD Integrated GPU, in minimal install mode, via https://www.amd.com/en/technologies/software

:zap::zap::zap: If your machine comes with a proprietary power management software (From Asus, Dell / Alienware… etc), make sure that it’s setup properly to run TouchDesigner on the Nvidia / AMD DEDICATED GPU when plugged to power. Otherwise, it’s likely that TouchDesigner would run on the integrated graphics, hence it is important to also make sure your integrated graphics are up to date.
