Have anyone tried implementing flexible windowing system using TD?

Hello,
please may I ask if anyone tried going down the rabbit hole and implementing flexible windowing system (or should I rather say tabbing system?) that would allow for runtime layout configuration - like in Visual Studio or Unreal Engine? I would like to have ability to configure various UI containers on runtime by dragging and dropping them somewhere (resulting in UI movement / horizontal or vertical split / new tab / etc). I know this will get pretty complex quite fast, so before I dive into it, I thought I might ask if anyone have already tried / succeeded in doing something like this? Thanks

Reading about widgets I have noticed this:

I am not sure what is the state of Advanced Widgets, but this sounds a bit like what I tried to describe in previous question. Please may someone elaborate on this concept? (Just so that I won’t re-invent the wheel in case something similar is already being developed directly by derivative.)
