Hi everyone,
I’m trying to play back HDR10 (PQ / Apple ProRes) video in the latest official release TouchDesigner 2025.31550 on macOS (Apple Silicon – M4 Max), but I can’t seem to get proper HDR output on my HDR display.
The video plays, but it looks washed out — the overall image is desaturated and flat, and the bright HDR regions don’t appear at all.
It looks almost like a log-encoded (S-Log-like) image rather than proper PQ HDR.
Here are my settings:
System setup:
-
macOS Sonoma 15.1 (MacBook Pro M4 Max)
-
TouchDesigner 2025.31550 (Commercial license)
-
Display: Built-in MacBook Pro XR Display
→ Set to HDR Video (P3 ST2084) in System Settings -
Video format: Apple ProRes 422 HQ
-
Color transfer: SMPTE 2084 (PQ)
-
Color primaries: BT.2020
TouchDesigner settings:
-
Preferences → Color tab → Editor Window Pixel Format: HDR 16-bit Float
-
Window COMP → Window Pixel Format: HDR 16-bit Float
-
Movie File In TOP → Pixel Format: Use Input (I also tested other formats, but no visible difference)
In this setup, HDR playback works correctly in QuickTime Player and other macOS apps, so HDR output on the system side should be functioning properly.
However, in TouchDesigner, the image remains SDR-like — washed out, low contrast, and without proper PQ tone mapping.
Has anyone successfully achieved HDR10 (PQ) playback on macOS using TouchDesigner?
Is HDR output currently functional on macOS, or is it only supported on Windows?
Any advice or confirmation from others who have tested HDR workflows would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance!
