I’m trying to get the best quality 4K resolution and color for HDR display panels on youtube. What are the best workflows people can recommend for output with HDR display in mind?
Currently I am just outputting pro res 10bit and taking into Davinci Resolve for conversion, but using HDR seems to dull the color in the timeline which makes me think my input or output settings are wrong. There are just sooo many options it can get a bit overwhelming. Ive spent about a week experimenting with trying to get HDR tags etc worked out in davinci and apple TV is still a challenge to register correctly.
Does anyone have a solid proven HDR workflow and can share some settings that will preserve the best color/gamma for 4K HDR? In my case I just want the best color workflow for youtube in HDR.
I would be inclined to do the final export through Resolve as you are.
About the ‘dull’ color when doing HDR: if you are working in color ranges that do not correspond to the active gamut of your display, you may want to make a viewport that applies a color space transform (ie: the opencolorioTOP) and use that to transform the data into something that looks correct on your monitor.
Hi flowb, thanks for the reply! It almost seems like the amount of extra steps involved to get to this next level of color depth, and for still a quite niche % of eyeballs, might not be worth it… The amount of hours and headaches from trying to insure 4K across all devices is WAY tougher than making the artwork. You have to be some kind of codec genius to get everything working smoothly on every device.
I think HDR looks amazing on nature footage and documentaries etc, but pixel animation doesn’t get quite the same benefit from that depth. I might change my mind when it becomes more standardized but I’m a lil burnt out on it rn.
