Is rtpMIDI the right / easiest way to do this?

Hey I know there are plenty of ableton / TD posts on here and I have been digging through them but not finding much at all about rtpMIDI.

I essentially want to send midi from Live to TD, but Live is on a mac and TD on a networked PC.

I’m able to get both computers to recognize each other on the network, but beyond that I thought rtpMIDI would create a virtual midi device that would show up in windows device manager but perhaps I am misunderstanding how it’s supposed to be used …

For simplicity’s sake right now I’m just trying to get two networked PC’s running TD to communicate via Midi over lan.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Lucas

Hi!
I’ve never tried rtpMIDI.
I have essentially the same setup and use OSC for this. It’s not too hard to make a couple of M4L devices for the conversion purpose. (if you’re interested, I can upload mine, but i guess there are plenty of them out there also)
You could also make one max patch(not M4L) that gets all the midi and converts it to osc.
The simplest solution of course would be to just go with MIDI and not use any ethernet, but I know there are many reasons for choosing ethernet over MIDI.

Hi hrtlacek,

I’m not familiar with M4L, is it something natively built into Live? I know about max4Live but am trying to avoid any routes that will involve extra expenses at the moment.

How does this work? (by the way lot of experience with TD but absolutely nill when it comes to Live / audio software

not quite sure if you realize M4L = max4live, sorry if you do.
Anyway,
with extra expensen, I guess you mean money, not CPU or something, right?

I don’t know about your ableton licence, but it may be included.
If so, it should be relatively easy to set up, if you find a max4live device that does it.

I would give you my stuff, but I didn’t make it public for a reason(no documentation, and never tried to make it usebale for anybody else but me, you know there is a lot of work between ‘works for me’ and ‘works for everyone’) and there seems to be a lot available anyway:

But actually: why care, is rtpMIDI causing headaches?
