Laptop Recommendations? M1 Max vs 30xxTI?

Hi all,

I have been using TD on my 2019 Macbook Pro for live performances and installations, but I find that it is sometimes overheating and dropping frames in perform mode. I’m using TD to run my light show and visuals in real-time, so the less lag the better.

Considering upgrading to an M1 Max Macbook Pro, but I am also open to a PC laptop. I’ve been looking into the Lenovo Legion 7i with an i9 & 3080ti, but I’m not sure how they compare. I think the biggest deciding factor for me would be the thermals though, to avoid more overheating/throttling. I don’t mind fan noise, as I am mostly working in loud nightclubs anyway, so that wouldn’t really matter.

Besides TD, I also do a lot of music production, work in Blender, Photoshop and video editing. This laptop would be my traveling rig away from my studio workstation (2019 rack-mounted Mac Pro with a 3080 for Bootcamp use.) Any recommendations are welcome.

I have a Razer Blade 15" (2019). It’s a great laptop design-wise, but definitely gets hot and suffers odd issues from time to time (battery bloated, had to have it repaired, the discreet GPU died in it for a few weeks and then randomly re-appeared one day, screen doesn’t close very well). Still running though shrug.

My partner just got an Asus ProArt StudioBook 16". So far she likes it. Great “overall” laptop geared towards creatives. Solid AMD CPU inside, 64GB RAM, 2TB SSD, 3070, etc… Can’t beat the price either. A bit on the large side, but bigger == fewer heat problems.

We know a few folks with StudioBooks as well who seem to love them. I’d give one a shot!

Thanks Dylan! Considering maybe even doing an i7 3070ti build to minimize any throttling that could occur with a beefier GPU.
