LTC In:. Inconsistent operation

Hi there,

I’m playing an LTC track in Reaper, sending it to TD via Rearoute, but more often than not it just does not work. I see the signal in the audio in device, but the frames are all over and it’s not right. It sometimes works and I don’t know why. It makes me think that TD is trying to use the ASIO driver exclusively.

Also, can TD use a different audio in device compared to audio out device? Doesn’t seem like it.

This is really frustrating after almost a year of working on this.

Hello, I used LTC input for a project with no problems.
I used a premade LTC track, made with horae.app (mac only :frowning: played on Ableton Live on my MacBook Pro, transmitted via spdif (asio motu on my mac, asio motu on my PC) and received in TD. All was working perfectly, so the musician was able to slow, speed or stop the tempo and the video stuff was perfectly in phase.
And yes, you can have different devices for in and out and even for different in and out.

I’m also doing all my work on one machine, so is there an ASIO limitation? I’ve read where ASIO devices are often run in exclusive mode. I may do a video to illustrate what i’m seeing.

update: I’ve updated Reaper to the latest version. That didn’t resolve the issue. I updated Touchdesigner to the latest version. That seems to have fixed it…until I closed both applications and reopened them.

I turned off the audio device in, waited a while, turned it back on…and now it works again. !? I’m going to see if the order of opening each application seems to matter. Another possibility is some ASIO driver is causing issues.

I’ve uploaded a video demonstration. Sorry there’s no audio. But I did note what happens in the description. For some reason it works sometimes and others, there’s this odd audio ‘flicker’ that kicks the LTC Chop and gets it off track. I eventually disconnect/reconnect it and I think* that is the workaround. update: its not. that doesn’t always work

After a lot of experiments, I believe this is an ASIO issue with TD. ASIO has a history of not liking to share devices. The flickering of the LTC chop even when the audio device in chop is off indicates that TD is likely trying to open the ASIO device exclusively or something. I have no way to prove it. It’s odd that it works sometimes.

The solution…is to use ASIO link pro or Synchronous Audio Router.

Yeah, that’s likely the issue. TD doesn’t share ASIO devices (the driver doesn’t lend itself well to that).

I agree with Malcolm, each ASIO device can be use only by one program.
My solution in this case is to use Audinate Dante Via, who own the asio link and the multiple programs are linked to Via where you make your routing. Paying but not so expensive app and very useful for many things.

I tried a test with Reaper and Ableton to see if I could send an audio track from Reaper to Ableton and then have Ableton send it back to Reaper. Reaper would use ASIO4All and Ableton would use Rearoute ASIO. Reaper still acts as the Rearoute “master” though and those in/outs are available in the app. Not sure how Reaper has implemented it exactly. It worked pretty well, although there was admittedly some crackling. I did not try driving Ableton with an LTC track ( not sure if it can even do that). I should though. But if it succeeds, it doesn’t really help me out. All it would do is show that Ableton maybe has a better implemented ASIO method in terms of Rearoute.

Does this essentially mean that LTC in is best implemented with something other than ASIO? I think it does.

As an update I was able to get it working with Synchronous Audio Router as well as ASIO link pro, both free tools. I am a happy camper again
