what would be the most efficient way to record an entire VJ liveset?
My first thought would be to render single frames, so when TD would crash, you are sure you recorded everything.
Performance-wise, what would be the most efficient way to do this?
I’m open to invest in something like a capture card or something if that would be of significant performance improvement.
I’m also interested if I could have an extra laptop that captures everything.
(even if I only have 1 TD license)
there are a few approaches. Depending on your setup, sometimes it might be enough to record all controller values and play those back after.
Otherwise a third party software like OBS might be useful. From TouchDesigner, output your video as a Syphon / Spout stream and record this in OBS.
But also an external capture device can be nice. Here it largely depends on the quality you expect from the recording. If you look for HDMI Stream recorders you might come by some devices that would satisfy your needs.
Perhaps depends a bit on the length of the set and how many controls but generally this should be fairly low impact. I‘ve been doing this pretty successfully using the Record CHOP. Just make sure to give it a try and make sure it works for you - especially having your system setup to easily switch between controller and recording.
