SOLVED: Constant Mac Crashing

Hi, I’m consistently seeing crashes on my Mac every time my computer goes to sleep. When I try to go back to work, TD is frozen and unresponsive. I have to force quit it in order to regain control. This is quite disruptive to my daily workflow. This was happening in previous versions of TD and previous versions of MacOS too.

It would save me so much time and I would be forever grateful if you could resolve this

Does it happen in a default file ?

Like I just open TouchDesigner, tell my Mac to go to sleep, and when it wakes up it should crash ?

Do you get a crash report ?

Best,
Michel

It never shows a crash report, it’s just completely frozen and unresponsive.

I’ll try tonight with a blank project when I go to sleep and report back tomorrow.

You can find the crash reports via Applications->Utilities->Console. Look for a TouchDesigner crash report under Crash Reports in macOS 10.15 or later, and under User Reports in macOS 10.14.

So I just tested this. Steps to reproduce…

Open a blank TD project (nothing is there, not even the default jellybean stuff).
Close laptop. Step away for some time (today it was 4 hours).
Open laptop, TD is frozen.
No crash reports listed for today when this happened.

However this is a Diagnostics Report created around the time just after I closed the laptop.

Does this offer any insights?

@hekuli

Thanks for the extra details.

This is assigned for a developer to look into it.

Best,
Michel

@hekuli Could you check in the Console log for anything named TouchDesigner where Michel mentioned in the post above.

We can’t easily reproduce, I have the same spec 14" macbook and tested sleeping for 6-7 hours last night, worked fine. However, I am running macOS 13.5.2, the lastest and one ahead of you.

There are a lot of different sleep options as well which could be a difference. Here are my settings under ‘Battery’ preferences.

Hi @ben,

Thanks for looking into this. The only other Touchdesigner things I see in the Console are under the “Diagnostic Reports” sidebar. This is another one logged just before the one I sent previously.

And here’s a screenshot of my battery settings. Not sure if it matters, but I believe this issue happens regardless of if I’m plugged into power or not. However but with the incident I reported, it was definitely plugged in the whole time.

I will try upgrading the OS today and see if I can still reproduce.

Hi @ben
I’ve updated to the latest MacOS (Ventura 13.5.2 (22G91)). Still seeing the same problem.

These are the only 3 entries in the Console after closing my laptop with a blank project open. Again I came back and everything with TD was completely frozen and I had to force kill it.

I never see this behavior with any other applications. I don’t believe I have any weird sleep settings, and I’m not running any kind of apps/services that I think would interfere with the process.

Hi, thanks, those don’t give us any useful debug information however.

Next time it crashes / freezes, before force quitting go to the Activity Monitor, select TouchDesigner app and from teh action menu select “spindump”. Send this to us and we might be able to see more about where it is crashing.

We’ve had the 3 people with macbooks here at Derivative try to replicate this and are unable to. It could likely be a conflict with some service, driver, or process you have installed but unfortunately there isn’t much to go on right now.

OK. Thanks for checking. I’ll do that and report back soon.

Just to update on this…

I updated to the latest MacOS as stated in my previous post. I only had that one crash. Since then I haven’t experienced this problem. Not sure if the OS update helped or what… b/c it’s strange that it’s ok now, but did crash 1 time. Anyway, seems ok for now.
