Tags show up in Search & Start Menu, but not in "Open with" context menu

Hello,

I found the tag feature when installing parallel builds invaluable, and even though this bug makes it a bit harder to appreciate, I still do.

I noticed that the tags don’t appear in the “Open with” menu, but do appear elsewhere (i.e. Start Menu, Search). I also found that there are many other posts on the topic, but none that explicitly show this behaviour (Tags Dissappear, Windows 11 doesn’t show tags, Parallel Install Confusion). If the only way to fix this is to act on the Registry Editor, I will do, but just wanted to point out this weird behaviour.

I am running Windows 10 Pro, Version 10.0.19045 Build 19045.

The tags do work in the Open With… menu, however there is a strange behavior in Windows that these tags are blown away when some Windows Updates are applied. To fix it, just install a new build or uninstall/reinstall one of your builds and all the tags will come back.

Hi @NiccoG,

it’s a bit a hack how this is done in windows. There are registry entries in HKCR\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\MuiCache for all TouchDesigner installations. The ValueName is usually the path to the TouchDesigner executable plus .FriendlyAppName.

The easy solution is what @Ben is recommending. Installing one build is rebuilding all tags.

cheers
Markus

Hi @ben and @snaut,

thanks for the flash response. I’m happy editing the Registry Editor (just did) and everything works as expected. Just thought that posting about my specific setup would be useful, but apparently you were already aware of this.

Thanks again!

This is a good tool that helps when you have parallel installations:

Thanks @tekt! This is really useful, I might contribute to the project as it seems to be abandonware.
