Tips to optimize the performance of TD on older systems

I will have to use a much older dual core i5 box to run TD. (if it runs at all)

Can anyone suggest ways in which I can optimize the performance of TD on older systems like this?

Graphics rendering will NOT be handled inside TD, so GPU performance issues I am less concerned with than CPU performance.
