TouchDesigner Crash while creating OPs

Hello,

I’m experiencing constant crashes in TouchDesigner.

Everytime I create a couple new OPs, doesn’t matter if it’s a CHOP, SOP or TOP, TouchDesigner get stuck and crashes.

It seems to only happens if my computer is connected to an HDMI second monitor, projector, TV.

I’ve done several clean/install with several TouchDesigner versions and Nvidia Drivers Versions rolling back to oldest working setups.

My machine is

Processor: 11th Gen Intel(R) Core™ i7-11800H @ 2.30GHz 2.30 GHz
RAM 32,0 GB
Windows 11 64-bit
GPU: RTX 3060

Nvidia Drivers: I tried almost any driver and combination, included the ones working until several months ago and the problem is the same.

The only thing I didn’t tried is a Windows 11 clean install.

Hi @npg000

Is that a laptop ?

As a first step, make sure that all your drivers, including integrated graphic drivers, are up to date and that your machine is free of bloatware.

The Bulk Crap Uninstaller helps in identifying unwanted or unneeded software: https://www.bcuninstaller.com/

Find the latest driver for your GPU at Official Drivers | NVIDIA
or use Nvidia Geforce Experience Update Drivers & Optimal Playable Settings

You can also make sure that your integrated GPU is running on the latest version available via Intel Driver Assistant.

You can use the AMD Adrenalin if you have an AMD Integrated GPU, in minimal install mode, via https://www.amd.com/en/products/software/adrenalin.html

:zap::zap::zap: If your machine comes with a proprietary power management software (From Asus, Dell / Alienware… etc), make sure that it’s setup properly to run TouchDesigner on the Nvidia / AMD DEDICATED GPU when plugged to power. Otherwise, it’s likely that TouchDesigner would run on the integrated graphics, hence it is important to also make sure your integrated graphics are up to date.

If the issue persists, try to generate a dump using Using WinDbg to Debug Crashes - Derivative

Hi @npg000

Can you downgrade to Nvidia driver 55X.XX and confirm if that fixed it?

Best,
Michel

Hi Michel,

Yes I’m on an GS66 MSI Laptop
at the moment the problem seems to be gone, I’ve done the following steps:

  • uninstalled NVIDIA App
  • rolled back to 566.14 (55X.XX isn’t available on nvidia site)
  • disabled Nahimic services
  • installed INTEL Graphics App
  • updated INTEL Graphics Drivers
  • positioning 2nd monitor on the left or right and checked if something changes.
  • unistalled any TouchDesigner version
  • Updated the MSI Dragon Center App and deactivate the MSHybrid Option in GPU Switch
  • reinstalled only the latest TouchDesigner version
  • Reactivated the MSHybrid Option in GPU Switch

I can create and connect several objects without crashing,
I can customize Components without crashing.

The interface interactions in TD like moving and connecting objects, seems to be “slower” or a bit “smoother”.

I’m not sure the problem is really solved and feel a bit unsafe to work with TD in live situations like this.

  • Nahimic services

Nahimic is notoriously bad in graphic softwares. Causing issues quite widely in gaming.

  • MSI Dragon Center App
  • MSHybrid Option in GPU Switch

Could possibly be other issues and what we’d call bloatware.

You can attempt to update to latest Nvidia build again and see how it behaves. If you don’t see any crash I think you are safe to go and the issue was Nahimic.
