Using texture to deform geometry

Hello all,
I am just a beginner with TD I hope this question is not too dumb. I was going through Matthew Ragan’s Make Some Noise tutorial series but had a problem just right here:

Everything is ok until this point, but when I use phong as material, the system I made to use coordinate z is not working, grid stays 2d even though I can move it with my noise variables. Only thing I made different from the video is in convert op, I selected Particles by Point instead of Particles(I guess because of the version difference), which seems completely irrelevant for me.

this tutorial is getting old.
It is still very useful, though you can now use a displacement map in the phong mat (see latest TD versions)
