Vulkan Device Error and Driver Issues - NVIDIA RTX 3050 Laptop GPU

Hello! I am encountering a persistent issue with TouchDesigner and would appreciate any assistance.

My system configuration is as follows:

  • TouchDesigner Version: 2023.12230

  • Operating System: Windows 11 Home

  • Laptop Model: Acer N20C12

  • Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 Laptop GPU

  • NVIDIA Driver Version: 576.02

I am experiencing two related issues:

  1. Driver Update Prompt: When I launch TouchDesigner, I frequently receive a pop-up window stating: “Please upgrade your Nvidia Graphics Driver to version 472.47 or later. Available from www.nvidia.com.”

  2. Vulkan Device Error: When I attempt to place a Render TOP within my project, TouchDesigner crashes and displays a “Vulkan Device Error” window with the message: “The graphics driver has returned a fatal error and TouchDesigner must exit. Please report this issue to support@derivative.ca” 1

Furthermore, I have checked my NVIDIA System Information, and Vulkan API Support is not listed.

I have already tried the following troubleshooting steps:

  • Restarting my computer multiple times.

  • Attempting to ensure my NVIDIA drivers are up to date (my current version is 576.02, which is newer than the 472.47 requirement).

  • Resetting my laptop.

Could anyone please provide guidance or suggestions on how to resolve these issues? Is there a known incompatibility with my current driver version or any specific settings I should check within TouchDesigner or my NVIDIA drivers?

Hello,

As a first step, make sure that all your drivers, including integrated graphic drivers, are up to date and that your machine is free of bloatware.

Make sure that TouchDesigner is fully up to date to the latest stable build available.

The Bulk Crap Uninstaller helps in identifying unwanted or unneeded software: https://www.bcuninstaller.com/

Find the latest driver for your GPU at Official Drivers | NVIDIA
or use Nvidia Geforce Experience Update Drivers & Optimal Playable Settings

You can also make sure that your integrated GPU is running on the latest version available via Intel Driver Assistant.

You can use the AMD Adrenalin if you have an AMD Integrated GPU, in minimal install mode, via https://www.amd.com/en/support/download/drivers.html

:zap::zap::zap: If your machine comes with a proprietary power management software (From Asus, Dell / Alienware… etc), make sure that it’s setup properly to run TouchDesigner on the Nvidia / AMD DEDICATED GPU when plugged to power. Otherwise, it’s likely that TouchDesigner would run on the integrated graphics, hence it is important to also make sure your integrated graphics are up to date.

If the issue persists, try to generate a dump using Using WinDbg to Debug Crashes - Derivative

Best,
Michel
