When I modify the normal map of PBR, the lighting stops working

I’m following Noto The Talking Ball’s tutorials on “How to make a landscape in TouchDesigner” and “How to make a spectrum shape audiovisual using feedback in TouchDesigner”. However, when I connect the “null” (which is connected to an “Over TOP”) to the “normal map” input of the PBR material, the light disappears.

In the render, I get a message saying: “This map is a normal mapping, but the SOP being used with it doesn’t have tangent attributes. Tangent attributes can be created with the Attribute Create SOP.”

I’m a total beginner and not sure how to fix this. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated!

thanks !

Hi there,

The short answer is that you simply need to add an “Attribute create” SOP to your geometry network and enable the “Compute Tangents” tab.

But if you are a total beginner, I recommend to first get familiar with all the basics in TouchDesigner, before proceeding to check more involved tutorials.

In that way, you will internalize the building blocks in a structured way. Tutorials can be great to speed up learning, but if you are just starting it will be much more rewarding to properly and patiently learn all the fundamentals first.

This video answers your question and explains why:

It’s from “The 100 series”, on TouchDesigner fundamentals. I recommend you to check out all the videos in there.

All the best,
Darien

Thank you very much, yes, I had already watched the videos, but I had forgotten that part. I feel like I need to watch them again. I’m also trying to do these types of exercises because they help me understand the program.
