Hi, I’m wondering why the Xbox Kinect camera is so common in TouchDesigner projects? What uses and/or advantages does it offer over a regular webcam? Since I’m having a hard time buying one, what other cameras could you recommend that I could still buy? (I don’t live in the US).

The Kinect has an RGB camera, an infrared sensor, and a microphone array.
It can detect the position of a body (or several bodies) and provide accurate XYZ position of each joints (shoulder, neck, wrists, as well as hands position etc…), even in complete darkness.
It’s fairly reliable too.
The Kinect can be found second hand and is still a very affordable option, even after factoring in the shipping costs
