Windows update shenanigans

Just noticed thanks to @Ennui that the Windows Update that rolled out today will wipe out any custom names you have given to your multiple TouchDesigner installs using the Custom Install Options in the new installer.

This means when you go to Open With… on a .toe file, all your custom names are missing and you will just see ‘TouchDesigner’.

Luckily the functionality is not gone, it is just wiped out by Windows Update. If you install a new build and use “Select build to replace”, then your custom name will be re-instated.

Unfortunately, if you try to reinstall the same build to bring back the custom name, that will not work!
The installer goes through another route and will not give you the custom name in that case. When you want to restore the custom name for the same build, you’ll need to uninstall, then install again and reset your custom name. Not so nice. I guess it depends how many builds you have and if you can wait until our next post and just ‘replace build’.

Thank you Microsoft.

if you’re into hacking the windows registry, this is a quick fix to restore/write a custom name:
